The Canadian Muslim Forum (CMF) welcomes the federal government’s proposed Combatting Hate Act, introduced today to strengthen Canada’s response to hate crimes, intimidation, and violence.
With Islamophobia and hate-motivated incidents on the rise, this legislation is a timely step toward ensuring the safety and dignity of communities across Canada.
At the same time, CMF cautions that such legislation must not be politicized or misused against freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly, which are firmly protected in both the Canadian and Quebec Charters of Rights and Freedoms. Clear definitions, consistent application, and community involvement will be key to its success.
CMF believes , “This bill has the potential to send a strong message against hate and violence while affirming Canada’s commitment to pluralism and democracy,” .
