First, we would like to confirm that we do not accept any insinuation that Quebec is Islamophobic or that the majority of Quebecers are Islamophobic.
Islamophobia exists in Quebec as in the rest of Canada as in any other country. We believe as Quebecers that Quebec is an open society.
This being said, we reiterate our support for the appointment of Ms. Amira ElGhawaby as Canada’s Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia. Mrs. ElGhawaby’s experience and knowledge give her all the necessary skills to take up this very important challenge with brio.
We also reject any attempt, direct or indirect, to remove her from office or push her to resign.
Any effort to have Mrs. ElGhawaby removed from her position as Canada’s Special Representative on Combating Islamophobia will be viewed as an assault on the position itself.
On the other hand, we thank Québec Solidaire for abstaining from voting on the motion that was adopted, on January 31, 2023, in the Quebec National Assembly and which called for the resignation of Ms. ElGhawaby.
