Montreal, May 1st, 2024

For immediate release,

During the last few days, an encampment was held by student groups protesting the war on Gaza at McGill University in Montreal, which proved peaceful during the recent period.
The Canadian Muslim Forum (FMC-CMF) and Table de concertation de la communauté musulmane du Québec(TCCMQ) have been in continued communication with various stakeholders to maintain the peacefulness of the students’ movement and avoid any unwanted developments.

In this context, it is necessary to point out the positive performance of the Montreal police, SPVM, up to the present time in dealing rationally with all parties and maintaining peaceful channels of communication.

With news received on social media platforms about the intention to hold anti-encampment demonstrations at McGill University, the FMC-CMF calls on the students not to be drawn into the actions and reactions and to immediately report and communicate with the police forces present at the place if the protesters are exposed to threats and to leave matters to the competent authorities to deal with matters.

The FMC-CMF addresses the administration of McGill University and the student movement to meet and speak directly about the demands of the protesters and the sincere pursuit of deep, peaceful solutions far from politicization and militancy, which does not lead to any good and increases the state of tension in our beautiful city, which is indispensable.

The Canadian Muslim Forum(FMC-CMF) stresses the freedom of expression and peaceful assembly that characterize our democratic society.

The FMC-CMF affirms its rejection of manifestations of any sort of discrimination on racial, religious, or cultural grounds. These include racism against Palestinians, anti-Semitism, and Islamophobia.
