The Canadian Muslim Forum (FMC-CMF) views positively the new bill, Online Harms Act,  presented by  Minister of Justice, Mr. Arif Virani on Feb 26, 2024.

The aim of the Bill, according to the federal government, is to address decisively the spread of online hatred which has proven to be causing great harm to society. Moreover, online hatred has essentially contributed to the rise in cases of Islamophobia hate crimes incidents, and other forms of aggression to which people of all origins have suffered throughout the country.

In addition, the aforementioned bill promises punitive measures for publishing harmful content for children online which are an ultimate need to protect the society at large.

The importance remains in how the legislation will be implemented whenever it’s approved, and the need for balance between protecting society from all sorts of bigotry and preserving freedom of expression.
