The Canadian Muslim Forum (FMC–CMF) expresses its strong opposition to the legislation newly tabled at the National Assembly that seeks to expand restrictions on so-called “religious symbols” and to prohibit prayer rooms in educational institutions across Québec, including colleges, universities, and schools.

The FMC–CMF warns that this bill represents a significant setback for the fundamental rights and freedoms guaranteed to all Québecers. The proposed measures would disproportionately impact women, youth, and students whose peaceful religious expression is protected under both the Québec and Canadian Charters of Rights. Such policies are continues troubling pattern of policies that many Quebecers view as undermining the principles of equality, dignity, and social cohesion.

The CAQ government must ask itself who truly benefits from targeting its own citizens’ rights and deepening divisions within society. These measures do not build cohesion , they erode it.

The FMC–CMF reiterates that authentic secularism requires the state to remain neutral while respecting individual freedoms. Suppressing personal religious expression contradicts the very foundations of a pluralistic and democratic Québec. Such policies send a discouraging message to young people that their identity makes them less welcome in public life.

The FMC–CMF expresses its deep appreciation to the many principled and courageous voices from civil society, academia, unions, and community organizations, which have publicly opposed this legislation and reaffirmed their commitment to protecting rights and freedoms for all.
