MONTREAL — August 22, 2026 — The Canadian Muslim Forum (FMC-CMF) is sounding the alarm following the reported arrest of a Montreal teenager allegedly planning an attack at a secondary school.

While the investigation must proceed and the presumption of innocence must be respected, the reported case is a stark reminder of a warning CMF has repeatedly raised: when hatred, Islamophobia and extremist rhetoric are normalized, words can become threats, violence and terror.

The timing is particularly significant as Canada approaches the 10th anniversary of the January 29, 2017 Quebec City mosque massacre, when six Muslim men were murdered while praying. Nearly a decade later, there remains far too little concrete action to confront Islamophobia and hate before they escalate into violence.

FMC-CMF is also increasingly concerned by political agendas that openly target particular segments of Quebec and Canadian society, turning cultural, religious and immigrant communities into political targets and sources of fear.

Online intimidation, harassment, threats and the targeting of entire communities are no less dangerous simply because they take place behind a screen. They can normalize hatred, amplify dehumanizing narratives and create an environment in which violence becomes easier to justify.

Political debate is legitimate. But demonizing communities, stigmatizing people because of their faith or identity, and exploiting fear for political gain are dangerous practices. History has shown that when hatred is given a green light, innocent people ultimately pay the price.

The Canadian Muslim Forum calls on governments, political leaders, schools, law enforcement and social-media platforms to take concrete action against Islamophobia, hate and violent extremism, including the online intimidation and harassment that can fuel them.

We cannot wait for another tragedy before acting.

The victims of the next act of hatred will not be politicians or commentators. They will be innocent Quebecers and Canadians children, women and men.

As we approach January 29, 2027, the tenth anniversary of the Quebec City mosque massacre, CMF’s message is clear:

We have been warned before. We must not wait for another Quebec City to act.
